Head Scratcher — Mephibosheth - Wednesday

Today’s Verse

Deuteronomy 7:9

Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands. (NLT)

We all can agree that we need more kindness in the world. If you take the time to look around and be intentional, you can find acts of kindness throughout your day. Maybe someone held the door for you as you entered a building or paid for your coffee at the drive-thru this morning. Even a small gesture, a kind smile, or asking you how you are doing can be enough to make your day. A little kindness can go a long way.

King David was moved by covenant love and faithfulness to his friend Jonathan that he sought out Mephibosheth, not to punish or exile him, but to show him kindness. Not just any kindness, but the kind that reflects the very heart of God. David restored Mephibosheth’s inheritance and gave him a permanent place at the royal table, "like one of the king’s sons" (2 Samuel 9:11).

This is not just a story of unexpected generosity; it’s a powerful picture of the gospel. Like Mephibosheth, we are broken, spiritually crippled, and separated from the King. We often believe we are forgotten or unworthy. Yet God, because of His covenant love through Jesus, seeks us out. He doesn’t look at our brokenness as a disqualification. He meets us in our brokenness.

The kindness of God goes beyond mercy. Mercy withholds the punishment we deserve; kindness extends undeserved favor. God not only forgives our sins through Christ, he invites us to dine at His table as beloved children, not as distant servants.

Think of Mephibosheth, carried to the king’s table each day, unable to walk on his own yet treated with royal dignity. That’s grace. That’s the kindness of God.

REFLECTION

Where have you felt like Mephibosheth, broken, unworthy, or afraid? How is God calling you to rest in His kindness today?
