Head Scratcher — Hosea - Friday
Today’s Verse
Romans 5:8
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (ESV)
For me, the most compelling (and heartbreaking) part of Hosea and Gomer’s story lies in the second half. At some point in their marriage, Gomer runs away and returns to her previous lifestyle. God commands Hosea to find her and bring her home. But what he finds is that in order to bring her home, he must buy her.
This is his wife. He has loved her, and they have committed their lives to each other. Gomer broke that vow in some of the most egregious ways. Yet in spite of everything, Hosea still chased after her. And on top of that, he had to pay to get her back. She had everything she needed and traded it all for a life of slavery. Yet Hosea paid roughly a month’s wages to get her back. His selfless sacrifice towards his bride who had run away mirrors the selfless sacrifice of Jesus. He was the price that was paid to free us from our slavery to sin.
Hosea’s story teaches us about love and marriage and commitment. But the story of Hosea is the story of redemption. It’s the story of our redemption. It foreshadows that God would eventually pay the price for our freedom, and it would cost Him His one and only Son.
If you ever doubt the love of our Heavenly Father, remember this truth. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
REFLECTION
If you haven’t yet fully trusted Jesus’ sacrifice and love for you, we encourage you to take a step this week to open your heart to Him. Find a quiet moment to honestly tell God where you are—your doubts, your struggles, and your need for His forgiveness and guidance.
We’d love to help walk with you as you take this step. Reach out—we’d love to listen, pray with you, and help you on your journey of faith.
Remember, just as Hosea pursued Gomer at great cost, Jesus has already pursued you and paid the ultimate price for your redemption.
